Crime can affect anyone, harming people and society in many different ways. The type and nature of crime is always evolving, and some data sources are better than others for measuring different types of crime.

How we measure crime at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has changed in the last 40 years too.

We produce statistics on crime levels and trends, which are based primarily on the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime data.

Our next ‘Bringing data to life’ webinar for beginners will explore crime statistics are and how we measure them. We will also answer some complex questions on crime statistics, like whether crime is going up or down, or whether there’s a ‘best’ measure to understand trends in overall crime.

We will be joined by guest speakers to explore what data tells us about crime in the UK and how crime statistics can be used to help you stay informed, enhance public safety, and help policy and decision-makers make data-driven changes for the better.

We will be using Slido during this event.

Learn more about the series

From health to inflation or the environment to migration, we explore how statistics are used to help us make better choices and improve our public services.

‘Bringing data to life’ is a series of online events, hosted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which explore how your data makes a difference. We will explain the life cycle of statistics, from how we gather the data to releasing the figures that shape the future.

You will hear from people who work with data across government, exploring how they create statistics, where they have made an impact, and how your data is kept safe. These interactive events are open to anyone who wants to know more about how we tell the story of our society through numbers.

The events will take place through Microsoft Teams. They will also be recorded and available to watch later. We encourage you to support the ‘Bringing data to life’ series by using #StatisticsForThePublicGood on LinkedIn, X and Threads.
